Savannah State University is an historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. SSU was originally founded inside 1890 as the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth. A college was located in Athens, Georgia for several months when you took 1891 until moving to its permanent location inside Savannah. Within 1932, the school became called Georgia State College. Around 1950, the school changed its title to Savannah State College & gained university status in 1996.

Savannah State's colors come blue and orange and their nickname is the Tigers. Savannah State sports teams participate within NCAA Division I personally (I-AA for football) and come independent.
